About Atelier Wels

The studio provides space for inspiration, learning and exchange. Our academically trained instructors offer individual, inspiring guidance with genuine care. We are a place where art connects people, new ideas emerge and personalities grow. Our programme ranges from painting, encaustic art and drawing to three-dimensional work with clay, wood, metal, plaster or papier-mâché, as well as printmaking, textile art and creative material experiments. And it is continually expanding.

Our philosophy

Atelier Wels was founded by Josef Nemeth in 1980. His belief that art should be accessible to everyone remains the guiding principle of the association today.

Our programme is for children, teenagers and adults from all walks of life – for anyone curious to try something new. The studio is a protected and inspiring space where art can be experienced, explored and created. It is a place to experiment without pressure to perform, with the freedom to learn from your own experiences.

For us, understanding art means becoming active, looking closely, asking questions and developing your own ideas. The special atmosphere of an artist’s studio creates space for curiosity, perception and creative practice.

A central focus of our work is engaging with art and our visual environment. We learn to perceive consciously, look carefully and make what matters visible through our own forms of artistic expression.

The aim is not to create a “correct” picture. It is about finding personal ways into art and developing an individual form of expression.

The studio is also a place for people to meet. Creating together in small groups encourages exchange, openness, social skills and tolerance. Different ideas, abilities and perspectives are experienced as an enrichment.

Each person’s individual development is at the heart of our work. Every participant should be able to grow according to their own abilities and interests and discover new paths into art.

Our ambition goes beyond teaching art. Atelier Wels aims to support young people in their personal development, discover talents and build confidence. Engaging with art opens new perspectives and can even inspire future educational and professional paths.

In this way, we bring together knowledge, perception, creativity and personal growth – creating a place where every idea can find its own path.

“Art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes visible.“
– Paul Klee
